A ton of slag cement is not a ton of portland, because it goes into the mix at a different rate and does a different job. The honest comparison is cost per cubic yard.
TxDOT Item 421 allows 35 to 50 percent of portland to be replaced with slag cement, and up to 70 percent in mass placements. At 564 lb of cementitious per yard, a 40 percent replacement is about 225 lb of slag per yard, so one 25-ton load covers roughly 220 yards.
Slag cement generally prices under portland in Houston because it is ground from a byproduct. When it does not, the reason is freight or allocation, and we will tell you which.
Expect slightly slower set and early strength, then higher 28 and 56 day strength, lower heat, lower permeability, better sulfate and chloride resistance. Plan finishing and stripping around that.
Slag cement concrete cures lighter. Architectural and exposed work often specifies it for that reason alone. It can also show a temporary greenish tint at stripping that fades with air exposure.

Silo discipline matters more with slag. Slag cement is ground finer than most portland and flows differently. Do not blend it into a portland silo unless the plant is set up for it. A dedicated silo or pig keeps the mix design honest and keeps the certificate meaningful.
